CIEE TEFL review, submitted by Bernie.
I’m not usually a ‘review’ person. I’ll make an exception to the norm because I’ve something to write that I think is important to share.
Starting off, CIEE was great. No issues there. Course great, assistance (support) great, certificate great, help with looking for work: great. All great.
Here is what I wanted to write:
I was teaching to EFL students 2 years in Rome, without any TEFL certificate. It was possible to do it back then. I thought I was being so clever, saving on the TEFL certification fee. And for a while, I got away with it.
The rules changed, making it mandatory for all TEFL teachers in Italy to have gone through a TEFL program. One of the teachers at the school went through the CIEE program, so I enlisted onto the program and got the TEFL certificate.
It was a shock. I couldn’t believe how little I knew about the subject I was teaching, and I wish I had had the common sense to get TEFL qualified when I first arrived to Italy.
I clearly learned a lot on the course, and I’m proud of myself for getting qualified, but I still find myself leaning on old familiar ways – basically being a bad teacher.
Even if it’s possible to teach somewhere without the TEFL, take my advice and do it anyway. It’s going to help you in more ways than you think.
