5 TEFL Programs to Avoid in 2026/2027

Not all TEFL certification programs are worth your money. Discover 5 TEFL programs to avoid in 2026/2027, including ITTT, Teacher Record, World TESOL Academy, ESLinsider, and The TEFL Academy. Find out what concerns prospective English teachers should know about before enrolling.

TEFL programs to avoid in 2026/2027 is an updated look at some of the online TEFL and TESOL providers that prospective English teachers should think twice about before spending their money. Choosing the right TEFL course is an important first step towards teaching English abroad or online, but not all certification programs offer the quality, recognition, or professional value they advertise.

This article is an updated version of our previous investigation, Worst Online TEFL/TESOL Courses 2022. Since that original publication, the TEFL industry has continued to change, and we have reviewed the providers and concerns that we believe deserve particular attention in 2026/2027. Our latest list identifies five TEFL programs that we recommend prospective students approach with caution: ITTT TEFL, Teacher Record, World TESOL Academy, ESLinsider, and The TEFL Academy (TTA).

You may notice that MyTEFL is no longer included among the five worst providers. This does not mean that our concerns about MyTEFL have disappeared. We still have reservations about aspects of its operations and certification program, but based on our current selection, it narrowly misses out on the top five for 2026/2027.

Our aim is to help prospective TEFL students make informed decisions and avoid wasting money on qualifications that may not deliver what they expect. We encourage readers to examine the evidence, question accreditation claims, and look beyond marketing promises before committing to any TEFL or TESOL course. Here are the five programs that we believe deserve particular scrutiny.

1. The TEFL Academy (TTA): A TEFL Program to Avoid

The TEFL Academy website – one of the worst TEFL programs to avoid in 2026/2027.

The TEFL Academy (TTA) is one of the TEFL programs to avoid in 2026/2027, according to the findings published by Trusted TEFL Reviews. Our investigation raises serious questions about the company’s accreditation claims, marketing practices, and the way it presents its reputation to prospective students. In particular, there is an important distinction between having a course approved by an organization and holding genuine accreditation. These terms are not interchangeable, and prospective TEFL students should understand exactly what recognition their certificate provides before paying for a course.

Our investigation also examines concerns about the company’s online reviews, its claims regarding international recognition, and the impression it creates about its graduate network. Students considering The TEFL Academy should not rely solely on promotional material or impressive-looking accreditation logos. They should independently verify the credentials of the organizations named by the provider and check whether prospective employers will accept the qualification. 2. ITTT TEFL: Accreditation Concerns

ITTT TEFL (International TEFL and TESOL Training) is another provider that prospective students should research carefully before enrolling. One of the main concerns raised by Trusted TEFL Reviews relates to its accreditation and affiliation claims. ITTT operates several websites offering what appear to be the same TEFL and TESOL course programs, including teflcourse.net, teflonline.net, tefl-tesol.net, and tesolcourse.com. This can make it difficult for prospective students to establish exactly which company is providing their training and what credentials stand behind the qualification.

Our investigation also questions the value of several organizations listed among ITTT’s affiliations and accreditation partners. Being affiliated with an organization, paying for membership, or appearing in a partner directory does not necessarily mean that a TEFL course has been independently accredited. We also raised concerns about ITTT’s role as an intermediary for certain in-person TEFL courses, where students may be referred to third-party training providers rather than receiving training directly from ITTT. These are important considerations when comparing TEFL programs to avoid. Before enrolling, students should verify accreditation claims independently and establish who will actually deliver their training. Read our full ITTT TEFL accreditation investigation.

3. Teacher Record: Is This TEFL Program Worthwhile?

Teacher Record online TEFL certification homepage – featured among the TEFL programs to avoid in 2026/2027.

Teacher Record markets a free online TEFL certification course, which naturally attracts people who want to qualify as English teachers without spending hundreds of dollars on training. However, free does not necessarily mean worthwhile. Our October 2026 investigation raises serious questions about the quality and professional value of its TEFL certificate, particularly its accreditation claims. The gold-colored accreditation-style logo displayed on Teacher Record certificates identifies the organization as the “Teacher Record – TEFL Professional Institute”. This wording does not establish independent accreditation by a recognized external accreditation body.

There are also concerns about Teacher Record’s English teaching job board. Our investigation highlights issues involving advertised salaries, employment conditions, the geographical scope of job listings, and discriminatory requirements appearing in some advertisements. Prospective teachers should be particularly careful when considering job offers that appear attractive at first glance but contain important conditions in the finer details. A free certificate is of little value if it does not meet an employer’s requirements or adequately prepare you for a teaching position. For these reasons, Teacher Record deserves careful scrutiny when researching TEFL programs to avoid in 2026/2027. 4. World TESOL Academy: Reasons to Avoid This TEFL Course

World TESOL Academy is another low-cost TEFL provider that prospective students should approach with caution. Its advertised 120-hour TEFL/TESOL certification course has been offered at exceptionally low prices, including a price of US$38 highlighted in our investigation. While an inexpensive course may seem like an attractive way to enter the English teaching profession, students should consider what they are actually receiving in return. The price of a certificate should never be the only factor when choosing a professional teaching qualification.

Our investigation raises concerns about World TESOL Academy’s accreditation claims, its use of referral incentives, and the professional value of its certification. We also questioned its claims of UK government regulation and examined concerns about how quickly students could complete its courses. A 120-hour qualification that can reportedly be completed in under 24 hours raises obvious questions about the depth of the training and whether graduates will be adequately prepared to teach English. Prospective students should also be wary of relying on positive reviews when reviewers may have a financial incentive to recommend the same course. 5. ESLinsider: TEFL Certification Concerns

ESLinsider is a TEFL training provider that has attracted serious criticism from Trusted TEFL Reviews. One of the main concerns is the professional value of its TEFL certification. Our investigation questions the program’s accreditation status and whether its certificate is recognized by reputable English language schools and employers. Anyone considering an online TEFL course should establish whether the qualification will actually help them secure employment before spending money on it.

Our ESLinsider investigation also raises concerns about the advice associated with the program, particularly suggestions that people can teach English in countries such as China without the necessary university qualifications. Teaching abroad without meeting the relevant immigration and employment requirements can have serious consequences, including visa problems, deportation, and potential legal difficulties. We also documented allegations concerning the provider’s marketing practices, customer transactions, and online reviews. Given these concerns, we recommend that prospective teachers investigate ESLinsider thoroughly before considering its certification. Read our full ESLinsider warning for further details.
