We were recently asked about accreditation and which one is better, so we decided to write about accreditation for you here in this short and to the point article.
There is NO international accreditation body for online TEFL/TESOL certification courses. Period. Any school that tells you its courses are accredited are either lying, or lying. Or lying 🙂
So how come there are accreditation bodies out there and schools with accreditation badges on their website?
There do exist companies that, for an annual fee, will provide a school with “accreditation”. All this means is that someone saw a gap in the market, set up an accreditation website, and a few schools decided it might be a good idea to make a large payment to the company to show they are “accredited”.
So, the school can then claim it is accredited and the only time they will hear back from the accreditation body is the following year when the next (large) payment is required.
You see, no so-called accreditation bodies do more than just accept annual payments. Sure, they might claim on their website that the accreditation process is comprehensive and that they regularly maintain high standards by checking the school, yada yada, but in reality it is all about the yearly payment and no measure of standards ever take place at all.
It is also important to note here that we are a group of teachers who set up and run Trusted TEFL Reviews and as teachers of English overseas no school has EVER asked any of us which organization accredited our TEFL/TESOL certificates. Oh and also, no school has ever asked any of us whether our certification was taken online or onsite.
So, the importance of accreditation is not something which you should prioritize when looking to take a TEFL/TESOL course online.
What you should prioritize is finding a school with a good reputation, a solid study experience, and one that will help you find work once the course is over.
