CIEE TEFL review, submitted by Samantha.
I wanted to submit this review as a testament to my CIEE course and to warn against the really cheap TEFL courses.
I graduated CIEE in 2023. Since then, I’ve taught online, and onsite in Japan and South Korea. I have fond memories of the course and it set me up to succeed. There was some help in the job search department, but I didn’t need it so much as I was applying directly to the South Korean government program (EPIK).
For the past year, I’ve taught in Japan. Part of my job description is helping our collective of schools take on new teachers, so I’ve seen many, many, many resumes/CV’s. It’s our school policy to interview teachers via Zoom or Teams and also request a demo lesson. No applicant with a cheap TEFL has ever passed this application process. We’ve accepted applicants with onsite TEFL certs., as well as applicants with online TEFL certs. (CIEE TEFL, TEFL Online Pro, University of Toronto OISE), but never from programs that price their 120-hour TEFL at under $100.
And no, you don’t need a TEFL over 120 hours (unless it has teaching practice).
We follow an industry-wide application process. My advice, as a teacher and interviewer: don’t save on your TEFL certification. It isn’t a real long-term saving.
