I’m giving three review stars for the MyTEFL course because I thought it was a good training program online. I’m giving no review stars for the MyTEFL job placement because it’s a bait-and-switch scheme.
You pay for the MyTEFL job placement and it isn’t cheap.
- The course flowed well from one area of teaching English to another. Each module resulted in a fun quiz you need to pass before you can proceed to the next. The quizzes are not difficult, but I don’t see how they can be difficult because they are multiple-choice questions based on the previous module’s content. Some people hate multiple-choice questions. I don’t. I think they make you think and they relieve the pressure of having just one possible answer for the questions you are about to answer. The course platform was modern-looking and pleasant to the eyes.
- When you complete the course the job placement upsell begins, and I suspect this is a cash cow for MyTEFL. They try to convey the idea that it is difficult to find a teaching job overseas and that you should pay for their job placement service. I did. I paid to have MyTEFL find me a teaching job in Bangkok. It was only after I arrived that I clearly saw that finding a teaching job in Bangkok was easy with so many jobs advertised around the city and online. Because I have signed a contract with MyTEFL and the school, I’m stuck with the same job for a year. The kicker is that other new teachers at the same school are earning more than me. I can only guess that MyTEFL earns a commission through its job placement services.
- My Advice: take the MyTEFL course but don’t go anywhere near its offers of job placement. Or, better still, take a TEFL online course that offers job assistance and not job placement. With job assistance, the TEFL school will research schools and jobs for you and it’s up to you to decide which one you want to independently apply for.
