Overall, this isn’t a terrible program, but I definitely wouldn’t describe it as being excellent either, and by the end, I didn’t really feel that I fully got what I paid for. The first issue for me was the communication aspect. Instead of having one tutor whom you can correspond with, you are requested, instead, to contact The TEFL Academy when you need to ask a question, and this means submitting an email. I don’t want to be completely unfair on The TEFL Academy here as I did receive reasonably prompt replies, but I would have preferred some kind of messaging system, through the course system – as I see some other courses have – so that a. communication is more personalized, and b. replies would be faster. Also, I feel that being assigned one tutor will limit misunderstandings when it comes to specific course questions based on study history. My other beef with The TEFL Academy is that it takes far too long to receive the certificate. Mine took two months to arrive. This meant that I was left hanging in limbo for two months while I waiting for my certificate to be posted, so I could then begin applying for jobs. It should really take only a week or two. So this is another area in which The TEFL Academy could improve further. I did find the course informative and a reasonably user-friendly experience, but I don’t have anything as a comparison tool-this was my first online class taken. To sum up: going the online TEFL course option is by far the smartest TEFL option, but until The TEFL Academy modernize their communication and certification services, you might want to also take a look at other online TEFL program options. Two months is just way too long for something to arrive in the post.
